Studying in Canada
Why Study in Canada? Here are just a few of the reasons why hundreds of thousands of international students choose to study in Canada every year:
-
Affordability - compared to similar countries such as the USA, UK and Australia, for many programs, Canada is much more affordable.
-
Cultural Diversity - In 2022, Canada welcomed over half a million international students from more than 180 countries. Canada is welcoming and incredibly diverse, and foreign students feel a home from home here.
-
Popularity - Statistically, international students have represented up to 20% of total university enrolments in Canada, proving how popular the country is as a destination for foreign students.
-
Many options for pathways to Permanent Residence - In 2023, more than 60,000 international graduates transitioned to PR, making studying an excellent way into the country, and ultimately permanent residence.
-
Quality of Life - Canada consistently ranks high in quality of life indexes, and in 2023 came in third behind Sweden and Norway for Quality of Life, based on factors such as access to food, housing, quality education, health care and employment, as well as job security, political stability, individual freedom and environmental quality. It is easy to see why it is such a popular destination for students.
-
High quality education - Canada is recognized for its excellent, high quality education at all levels, from elementary to post graduate, as each province follows government standards to ensure high quality public education across the country.

Most foreign nationals who wish to study in Canada at a Canadian educational institution require a study permit, although there are a small number of exceptions where a study permit is not required: namely minor children (under 18 or 19, depending on the province), family members or private staff of a foreign representative, a member of the armed forces visiting Canada, or those wishing to study for 6 months or less. Please contact us if you are unsure whether you would require a study permit.

What do I need to consider to study in Canada?

-
The first step to studying in Canada is to gain admission to a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. Only after receiving this acceptance can an applicant apply for a study permit.
-
Further requirements are for applicants to provide proof that they have sufficient funds to pay for their studies in Canada, including living expenses for all family members, tuition fees and return transportation. Another very important consideration is to ensure you can prove the source of your funds, leaving no doubt as to how the funds were accumulated.
-
Students will also need to show documented proof that they will leave Canada at the end of their study period in the form of ties to their home country, incentivizing them to return home.
-
Competition is tough for prospective students applying to Canada, so a strong study plan is essential, providing a convincing argument as to why you need the additional education, and how it will benefit your future career.
-
As with all long-term visitors to Canada, applicants must also have no past criminal convictions and be in good health.

The validity of a study permit usually corresponds to the length of the study program, plus an additional 90 days. If a student wishes to continue studying in Canada after their study permit has expired, they may be able to apply for an extension, provided they have a valid reason for the extension, such as admission to another program.

A study permit application is complex and involved, so please talk to an expert before embarking on this journey.
