Federal Skilled Trades Program

Overview of the program:
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for foreign nationals who would like to become permanent residents of Canada based on experience in a skilled trade. Applicants must fulfil the following 3 minimum requirements: work experience in a skilled trade, language abilities in either English or French and either a valid job offer of full-time employment or a certificate of qualification issued by a province. If a candidate meets these minimum requirements, they can submit an application for the Federal Skilled Trades Program by creating a profile and entering the Express Entry pool. This is a points-based system where applicants are given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on their skills and abilities, and are ranked against others in the pool. Click here for more information on the Express Entry Pool and what happens after submitting a profile. In addition to the minimum requirements, applicants can also gain points for additional factors such as the abilities of a spouse, age, education, experience in Canada, family in Canada and a nomination by a province. As with all immigration programs, applicants must not be inadmissible to Canada. Click here for more information on potential reasons for inadmissibility and how to overcome them.
