Additional points gained in the Express Entry pool

Each immigration program has its own minimum requirements which must be met before a person is eligible to apply, such as language and work experience. However there are also a number of areas which are not mandatory, but can provide an applicant with extra CRS points in the Express Entry pool. Additional points can be gained in the following areas:

Arranged employment in Canada

Additional points are awarded to applicants who have a valid offer of full-time employment in Canada which comes with a positive LMIA. The number of points depends on the type of job offer and the level of skill involved. An additional 200 points are awarded to candidates who have a job offer in a senior management position, and an additional 50 points to those who have an offer in a skilled occupation classed as TEER 0,1,2 or 3, which usually requires a university education, or an occupation which usually requires college education, specialised training or apprenticeship training. Contact us to find out how many additional points you could be awarded for your offer of employment.

Spouse or common-law partner factors, if applicable

Applying with a spouse or common-law partner may provide an applicant with additional points in the following areas:

  • Level of education (up to 10 points)

  • Language proficiency (up to 20 points)

  • Canadian work experience (up to 10 points)

Relatives in Canada

These points are only applicable for a sibling, not a parent or any other family member. 15 additional CRS points are awarded to applicants who have a brother or sister living in Canada and who is a citizen or permanent resident of Canada. If you have a parent or a child who is a citizen or permanent resident and living in Canada, you may wish to consider immigration through family sponsorship. Click here to find out more.

French language skills

Applicants who have strong proficiency in the French language are awarded extra points. 25 additional points can be gained for those who achieved CLB 7 (roughly equivalent to upper B2) or higher on all four French language skills and CLB 4 (level A2) or lower in an English test. 50 additional points are awarded to those who achieved CLB 7 or higher on all four French language skills and CLB 5 (level B1) or higher on all four English skills. Click here to find out more about language requirements and tests.

Provincial nomination

Each Canadian province or territory has different requirements and is looking for different groups of people to contribute to its economy. A province or territory may choose to offer an applicant a nomination for permanent residence based on their particular skills, attributes or experience, which provides an additional 600 CRS points in the Express Entry pool. This effectively guarantees selection and therefore an invitation to apply for permanent residence. Click here for more information on the Provincial Nominee Program.
