Canadian Citizenship
Canadian citizenship is the legal status that grants individuals the right to live in Canada, vote in elections, and access the full range of rights and protections provided to Canadian citizens. If you have been a permanent resident (PR) of Canada for at least 3 years, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for Canadian citizenship, you must meet the following criteria:
-
Permanent Resident Status: You must be a permanent resident of Canada. This means you have been granted PR status and are not under any removal order.
-
Physical Presence Requirement: You need to have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years before applying. This period is measured as the number of days you were physically present in Canada.
-
Time spent outside Canada can count towards this requirement, but there are specific rules about how it’s counted.
-
If you’re between 18 and 54 years old, you also need to show that you’ve filed your taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period.
-
-
Language Skills: Applicants between 18 and 54 years of age must demonstrate proficiency in either English or French. This can be shown through a language test or certain educational credentials.
-
Knowledge of Canada: Applicants aged 18 to 54 must pass a citizenship test that evaluates your knowledge of Canadian history, geography, symbols, government, and rights and responsibilities of citizens.
-
Criminal History: You should not have any serious criminal convictions, especially for crimes related to Canada’s immigration laws, as this could affect your eligibility.
-
Intent to Reside: You must intend to live in Canada once you’re granted citizenship, although you don’t have to permanently reside in Canada right away.
